Lazy Days

I think everyone’s on vacation!

Nancy Ward is the only Guild Member who sent a blog link this month. The Lawn Chair Catechism (a very creative book promotion campaign) got her writing about ‘Oz moments’ and then that post won an award!  For more on that Deo Optimo Maximo award, click here. One thing leads to another, and my favorite (extremely short and sweet!) June post is about some new leads writers will want to follow up on.

We’ll try this again in August, and so place this date on your calendar: August 5 is the deadline for the August Blog Round-Up. Send me the link (charoster ‘at’ yahoo.com) to your own favorite blog post for July, and we’ll create a digest of the best just in time for the Conference (I’m so jealous, if you’re going!).

At the Conference, you’ll likely hear exhortations to BLOG like crazy, RESPOND to the blogs of others, and  LINK UP with other Guild Members to encourage and co-promote. This is where it starts!

I am also still very interested in any Online Markets for Catholic Writers that did not make it into my research in June. I have started a list and will post in the fall on More Online Venues, so if  you have leads for me, cough ’em up!

Thanks! Charlotte

  1. Jen, I’m glad you made this clarification. I just want to point out that whether it started as a book promo or not, I’m sure it’s had that effect and that others will see this as a possible (and creative!) strategy. The best stuff, though, is – like this – probably not orchestrated, but has that grassroots feel to it. I do thank Fr. L. for this and everything else he does….I constantly recommend his book, Praying the Rosary for Inner Healing….and lost track of who has my copy, so….must get another! Blessings to Sherry W., if you’re ‘listening’, for making your book so easily available! I’m always telling people not to sell it until they’ve learned to give it away, so BRAVA, and may sales eventually pay you back for the cost of producing this book! My priest recommends your book often. Charlotte

  2. True story about the Intentional Disciples discussion group: It’s not a book campaign at all. It started out with a passing comment via e-mail, “I’m forming a local group to discuss this book I read, as a way to get kick-started on evangelizing”.

Which led to, “Gosh, I’ve been wanting to read that book . . .” and next thing we knew, we had an online don’t-have-to-read-the-book club. Which neither the author nor the publisher had anything to do with, until Sarah Reinhard e-mailed them and asked would they pretty-please offer a discount for those who did want to buy the book.

Naturally OSV and Sherry Weddell are both thrilled with the turnout. (Even though the discounted price pretty much kills any hope of seeing a royalty for Sherry.) But their thanks should be directed to Fr. Dwight Longenecker, who again has no stake whatsoever in the book, but who has repeatedly recommended it as a good jump-starter for evangelism.

Anyhow, just had to share that in case anyone was wondering how OSV pulled this off . . . they didn’t.
