followersYou Could Be a Better Follower!

Somewhere, in the territory between “I can’t follow everyone,” and “I wish I could follow more Catholic bloggers” is a place I call ‘Feedly’. Here’s how it works for me:

1. Subscribe to Feedly’s free RSS feed aggregation service at feedly.com. (No, this is not an affiliate link!)

  1. Go to every blog (catholiccreative.org, anyone??) you wish to follow and cut/paste the URL into Feedly’s ‘Add Content’ box.
  2. Schedule a time to read those posts, or at least scan them for must-read and save-for-later files.
  3. Keep that appointment, and read your online magazine – filled with posts you can read, tag, categorize, save, or delete at leisure very easily.
  4. Try to give (at least some of) the authors some feedback, some small taste of fellow presence, some crumb of writerly solidarity, or token of appreciation.
  5. Share a few of the best with the click of a button.
  6. Add your own blog to Feedly for a handy backup system.
  7. Notice which blogs you always read and a) learn from them about writing catchy headlines, b) sort those into a file you’ll glance at more frequently, c) notice what kind of content you are most attracted to, as it will help you find your own niche in the world, and d) comment on those above all others.
  8. If these blog posts need to be saved as references for your own writing projects, get them into Evernote in one of two ways:

* Pay for Feedly Pro, which adds Evernote interface

* Use an IFTTT (If This, Then That…so cool!) recipe to send all Feedly saved-for-later posts to your Evernote account.

In Evernote, or in Feedly Pro, the posts will be more fully searchable.

  1. Make it your business to add feeds as you learn to manage this process. Your time, your interest, your feedback, are all valuable investments you can make in the lives of these actual persons who are blogging. When you share posts, and link people to one another, you become a valuable hub in the increasingly complex media network.

THANK YOU for the work you are doing by reading!!

      1. I usually send from my browser to Evernote, too, but I’d love an easy way to get things there from Feedly.

  1. I love feedly, though the mobile version doesn’t always render Web pages nicely, so I frequently shoot the link to a browser.
Thanks for the IFFT idea. I’ve been looking for a reason to use that tool.
My biggest problem is having too many feeds to keep up with!
    Thanks for a great post.
