Sarah reported on the breakfast and the recipients of the first CALA Lily awards on her post. I admit that I slept in and attended the first session at 9:00 a.m.: Lisa Hendey and Nick Thomm on “Being a Good Media Guest”–in which I found that had done somethings wrong and somethings right!

Then I attended Patti Armstrong’s session on “Everything You Need to Know About Publishing Before You Submit”–too late, in which I learned I broke many rules, did somethings right and others things wrong.

I checked in with my publisher again before heading to “Chumley’s” for lunch–John had told me that Wednesday was kick the tires day for bookstores and Thursday was, I guess according to his metaphor, the day to buy. So I did not want to distract him too much! But as I was there, a retailer was discussing his order, and John introduced me as a Scepter Publishers author, so he ordered my book!

I heard from my husband that Wichita endured a storm last night–our puppy Brandy was very scared of thunder and many limbs were down, so I checked in with him again over lunch. After lunch, Lisa Hendey, Sarah Reinhard, and Joe Wetterling discussed “Beyond the Blog: You Have a Blog, Now What?” in a panel discussion.

After calling my sister too early in Wichita to check on her status after the storm last night, I waited to call my mother in case she had slept late. No power outages or bad damage there!

Claudia Volkman interviewed Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle to discover “Marketing the Good Catholic Way (How to be Humble and Still Get the Word Out” and then I presented my hints on “How to Market a Non-Fiction Book to Catholic Audiences” through which I received as much or more than I gave!

Finally, I joined Nick Thomm and Al Kresta at the EWTN Radio broadcast booth to discuss Supremacy and Survival: How Catholics Endured the English Reformation. It was great to sit down with him face-to-face and discuss Henry VIII and his takeover of the Church in the 16th century and its consequences (for instance, that Henry VIII never had the prayers he hoped for after his death to free him from purgatory!).

In Chumley’s, Jerry Webster joined me for dinner–I suggested he give a presentation next year about the transition from self-publishing to commercial publishing!

After this break, I plan to head back to the Radisson Grand Ballroom to hear Edward Sri, PhD speak.

Until tomorrow: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.–Philo of Alexandria.

  1. I would love to know more about "Marketing the Good catholic Way" by Donna-Maria Cooper O'Boyle. I'm a new member, so let me introduce myself. I'm a fifty-five year old Italian woman, married with one son. I returned to the faith only five years ago, and in the process I wrote a book based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. I have real issues with trying to get it published, for two reasons: First, I'm not sure how to stay entirely humble if I succeed; second, my husband also wrote a book after he retired from his job as a philosophy teacher (by the way, his book is not about religion). So I made a few attempts and then gave up, until Jennifer Fitz talked me into trying again with a more serious approach. I started a blog, and my first post is a speach that I gave two weeks ago at the annual meeting of Communion and Liberation (Philadelphia area). It says a little more about my relationship with my husband, and I would be very grateful if some of you would take the time to read it and give me some advice. Here is the link:http://idealista-ontheroadtojerusalem.blogspot.com. I don't pray for the good outcome of my attempt to publish, it just doesn't feel right. Am I wrong?
