This month, the Catholic Writers’ Guild is touring Bonnie Way’s “North American Martyrs Kids Activity Book.” It has a Nihil Obstat from the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Through short biographies and fun activities, the  North American Martyrs Kids Activity Book draws children into the lives of 8 amazing saints.

Summary:

The North American Martyrs (also known as the Canadian Martyrs) served among the First Nations people of eastern Canada and the United States in the 1600s. Their lives are an amazing testimony to their love for God and for their fellow men. They are giants of the faith, yet they were also ordinary men who struggled with everyday problems like poor health, depression, unfaithful friends, spiritual dryness, and more. Though they lived centuries ago, their lives can still inspire us in our faith. The North American Martyrs Kids Activity Book brings the lives of these holy men alive for your children. Brief bios tell the stories of each of the saints. Colouring pages by Katherine Babcock help children picture the martyrs. There are also quotes from the saints, hands-on activities, and suggestions for applying what kids have learned from each saint to their own lives.

Excerpt:

St. Jean won the respect of the Huron warriors by helping out on the journey from Quebec to Huronia. How can you help in your home or school? Pay attention to what needs to be done. Offer to help right away, instead of waiting to be asked.

The Hurons were very different from the French. They had different ways of living and speaking. St. Jean loved them as they were and tried to learn their ways. Is there someone in your school or neighbourhood who is different from you? Try to love them and get to know them as St. Jean would.

St. Jean told his fellow priests to “be always cheerful.” Despite the hardships he encountered in New France, he lived the virtue of cheerfulness. Try to be cheerful, even when you don’t feel happy or want to smile.
