This month, the Catholic Writers’ Guild is touring Kathryn Casey’s book, Peace in Pregnancy: Devotions for the Expectant Mother.” It has an Imprimatur from Bishop Kevin C. Rhodes and a Nihil Obstat from Msgr. Michael Heintz, Ph.D. Pregnancy is full of challenges, but peace is still possible.

Summary:

Peace in Pregnancy: Devotions for the Expectant Mother is a place of rest to embrace the peace God offers. It serves both new and seasoned mothers, as the effort to embrace a state of peace renews itself with each change in life. This important resource offers helpful tools for expectant mothers to find peace and comfort, including: reflections to accompany you on the path to peace; profound lessons in peace from saintly mothers; meditations on the mysteries of our faith, including the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross; and fine art illustrations to help you discover the therapeutic power of beauty. “As a child finds rest in his or her mother, so God calls you to rest in him, to trust that he works all things for good for those who love him.”

Excerpt:

Pregnancy teaches us to watch and wait. We attend to the movements of our baby, ever aware of its growing presence, feeling the shifts and kicks and hiccups. This awareness shapes our mental space, aiding us beyond birth, training us to be acutely aware of our child’s whereabouts, exercising that mysterious maternal omnipresence that so mystifies mischievous children. We grow used to having this knowledge. If – after a doctor’s report, a questionable ultrasound, or a medical procedure — we look into the unknown, the pain of that unknown cuts deep.

We might have reasons to worry about our children, those born and unborn. We may have every reason to lose sleep at night, to hold our breath before we hear the rhythmic beating through the doppler or see the movement on the black and white screen. What we do with this concern is what moves us closer to peace or closer to suffering. (page 25)
