This month, the Catholic Writers’ Guild is touring Amanda Lauer’s book, ‘A Freedom Such As Heaven Intended.’ It is a 2023 CWG Seal of Approval recipient! Summary:
Despite her royal heritage, Alice is the third generation of women in her family to be enslaved, and the last if she has any say in it. The only thing standing between her and freedom is a certain Confederate soldier, First Lieutenant Marshall Kent. Follow Alice and Marshall’s story as suspicions turn to trust and a sense of admiration turns to something more as they navigate life during the final year of the Civil War.

The smile she gave him was dazzling. Just as quickly, though, it disappeared. She looked down at the ground and traced a circle in the dirt with her shoe. “Well, I guess it’s time we make our adieus…”
“I guess,” agreed Marshall. “Alice, I’ve enjoyed every moment we’ve shared today. Who knows where the winds of war will blow me, but if it’s God’s will, maybe this won’t be the last time we see each other.”

An avid reader and history buff since childhood, award-winning author and journalist Amanda Lauer is the author of the Heaven Intended Civil War series. A World Such as Heaven Intended won the 2016 CALA Award and A Freedom Such as Heaven Intended earned the 2022 Catholic Media Book Awards: First Place Catholic Novels: Inspirational. Michael Fraley has been editing and posting the CWG Book Blast since 2016. He's adapted the Arthurian portion of Geoffrey of Monmouth's “Histories of the Kings of Britain” to the comic page, has worked in book illustration, graphic design, and has also served as a newspaper columnist. In 2019 the story of his conversion to Catholicism was told in Nancy Ward's book Sharing Your Catholic Faith Story. His primary area of study is in the Jewish roots of the Church, with an emphasis on the Gospel of Matthew and the Epistle of James.
